—Background
New school in Richmond Upon Thames serving the local community
Situated close to the banks of the River Thames and near the historic Ham House, Boyle & Summers were appointed to prepare technical designs and the delivery of a new state of the art bespoke school for the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.

The ambitious new school uniquely provides accommodation for two Richmond schools, The Russell and the Strathmore schools, on a combined campus off Petersham Road. The two schools share certain common facilities such as the dining hall, dance studio and external areas. The local community also have access to the main hall and kitchen areas for local clubs and meetings.
—Design
High quality learning environments for all children
The new school is part single - two storey, arranged in an L shaped planform to reflect sensitive planning boundaries. The height of the building was restricted due to being within the setting of a conservation area. This also led to the development of a unique dormer roof balcony detail.

The new school provides ten new classrooms, two of which are early years classrooms and a self contained nursery classroom. There are a further three special needs classrooms with associated therapy, hygiene areas and ancillary accommodation.

The new school is a highly serviced building. It benefits from a hybrid ventilation strategy and steel frame which required careful coordination to ensure the volumetric constraints did not impact on the quality of the interior spaces. The school further benefits from a ‘breathing buildings’ ventilation system which provides fresh air and acoustic attenuation to the classroom accommodation.
