Local authorities should think strategically about their district, and beyond, and conduct a search for sites to identify those that are likely to be the most sustainable. A 2022 report by Transport for New Homes concluded that almost all the developments in their study would encourage car dependent lifestyles. We need to make sure that houses are being built within walking distance of shops and local services, promoting active travel and public transport use, creating walkable and sustainable neighbourhoods. To achieve this all stakeholders (planning & transport officers, urban designers and local communities) need to be engaged from the start, and only through such collaboration will we be able to create truly sustainable mixed-use neighbourhoods.
