12-15 High Street, Winchester
Repurposing • Complex Existing Buildings • Conservation Area • Heritage / Listed Building • Regeneration • Intricate detailing
—Background
The proposal is to repurpose the former Debenhams department store on Winchester High Street into a mixed tenure development. The first phase is to strip out the refurbish the existing building and subdivide the ground floor space into 3 independent units. Each unit will have their own entrance from the High Street and new service access from Market Lane.
—Design
Activating the public realm
A new entrance for the upper floors is proposed from St Maurice’s Covert on the northwest elevation bringing activity to the public space with active frontage and natural surveillance. This corner of the building forms the end of the vista when approaching from the Cathedral gardens and the proposals seek to enhance this by giving the building a public facing character by enhancing the façade.
Overall, the design seeks to enhance the public realm on every side and breathe new life into the vacant department store with Nando’s and Five Guys opening their doors to the public in summer 2024.
